Understanding corflute and its properties

Corflute, also known as corrugated plastic, is a lightweight and versatile material that is commonly used in various industries, including signage, packaging, and construction. It is made from polypropylene, a durable and weather-resistant plastic. Corflute is known for its corrugated structure, which gives it strength and rigidity while remaining lightweight.

One of the main advantages of corflute is its affordability compared to other materials, such as metal or wood. It is also easy to work with, making it an excellent choice for DIY projects. Corflute comes in various thicknesses, typically ranging from 3mm to 5mm, allowing you to choose the right thickness for your specific artwork.

When designing corflute cutout artwork, it’s important to consider the properties of the material. Corflute is water-resistant, so it can withstand outdoor conditions without warping or deteriorating. Additionally, it is easy to clean, making it suitable for long-term display. Understanding these properties will help you make informed decisions during the setup and design process.

Find suitable image and delete background

This part of the process if probably the most fiddly aspect of creating artwork suitable for a corflute cutout. You must first source a high resolution image that you wish to use (shutterstock or getty images is a great place to start, but note that these are paid image sites), and if this image has a background behind it, this background needs to be removed in photoshop by using the magic wand selection tool or similar.

Make background white or transparent

Now that the background around your object has been selected in photoshop, you can delete this out, paint it white or use the eraser tool so that you are only left with the object you wish to use for your corflute cutout. Make sure you save this nicely cutout object so you can use this to place onto the final cut path in Indesign.

Make object black

Now that you have removed the background, select the background by once again using the magic wand tool or similar, now invert this selection by going to drop down menu >select>inverse, and once done so, use the paint bucket tool or paint brush and select black. Paint the object you wish to use for your corflute cutout black so you are left with a silhouette of the object. Save as a JPG.

Auto trace in object in Illustrator

Now that you have your black silhouette JPG, open this in illustrator and use the auto trace silhouette feature to create a vector object of the silhouette.

Expand object

Now that you have a vector of your object, expand the object to make it a live/editable vector. Do this by using drop down menu >object>image trace>expand.

Outline object

Now that you have a live vector object, unfill it and make it an outline only.

Create offset cut path

Now that you have an outline of your object, go to >object>path>offset path and choose the offset cut path size you want around the object.

Delete inner cut path and drag and drop into Indesign

Now that you have your offset cut path, you can go ahead and delete the original/inner offset cut path. Copy and paste or drag and drop your offset cut path into indesign and size up to the size you require your corflute cutout to be.

Drop final artwork onto cut path

Now that you have your final offset cut path in Indesign, you can go ahead and place your artwork that you cut the background from in the earlier steps. Save as PDF and this is now a print ready corflute cutout.
